Losing Faith in a Professor

April 19th, 2006 by dasunst3r

It all started with a professor who is teaching EE 312 (Introduction to Programming) for the first time. She was nice, but problems galore loomed ahead.

First, she was not very familiar with the material, and that led to problems in grading for there did not exist a standardized grading procedure. I was taken by surprise when I could swear my code works fine when compiled by GCC only to find that I received a 17 because of ANSI and ISO C90 standards. Nevertheless, I had faith in her and thought that she deserves a second chance… until today…

As she was lecturing over “Polynomial Time,” I noticed that one of her slides was full of links. After some searching, it turned out that she merely copied and pasted from an entry in Wikipedia (reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polynomial_time). I was so disappointed in her because one would expect that a professor knows enough about the material to the point of not having to copy and paste off Wikipedia.

I really hope things get sorted out in the end, but I would still hate for her to lose her job. I say she should go back to what she’s familiar with.

Update: I have posted the PowerPoint slides. She does cite her sources, but I am nevertheless disappointed because of the copy-and-paste nature of the lecture. Also, it appears to be not only the Polynomial Time I mentioned, but a significant portion! AAAAAAAAA!
